Coming out of the cave…
I’m late…
Mad Hatter late, because while Mary and Costa are now with my wonderful editor, I’m briefly stepping out of my cave to do a little catch up before I dive back into their world and revise.
Some stories pour out of me and I feel as if the characters are in front of me and I’m really just writing what I see. With Mary and Costa though, it felt as if they were standing unseen behind me, one on each side, correcting me as I wrote and telling me that no, they wouldn’t do that, or say that, or react like that…
They both really intrigued me though and so I pushed on and they finally stepped into view and revealed themselves.
Writers are generally plotters or pantsers (flying by the seat of their pants) and I’m certainly the latter. I ache to be more organised though, and so I do try to plot on occasion, but I have to accept it doesn’t work for me. My characters don’t like me deciding in advance what they’re going to do and so I generally end up throwing most of the plot out and back to pantsting I go…
I did have a wonderful trip out though and caught up with some writing friends that I haven’t seen for more than a year (we usually catch up regularly). I know that we’re all missing friends and family so very much and there is a lot of loneliness right now so I shan’t go on about how it felt seeing them again, but I thought it might be nice to share a few photos.
We went to Rippon Lea Estate (where some filming for the show was actually done!) to see the Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears Exhibition. The costumes designed by Margot Wilson were exquisite! Essie Davis, who plays Phyrne Fisher must be so slender. There were amazing props too and it was just like stepping back in time. The costumes were on mannequins and I had to laugh, because at that time it felt a little as if I was looking at Costa and Mary – completely beautiful but I just couldn’t quite see them….
Gosh, I really am obsessed with this pair!
I shall get back to my cave now in the hope that when you meet them you’ll love them too. For now I shall leave you with some photos I took and see if you can spot Mary and Costa haha!
Sending love and hugs
